Practical information
Some practical information about traveling to, from, and within Leeds.
Travel
Airports
Leeds-Bradford Airport is our local airport in Leeds, if you can fly in through to it, we strongly recommend you do. There are bus lines connecting the airport to the city centre, as well as taxis and Uber.
Manchester Airport is another close-by option that is well-connected. There are trains and coaches coming from the airport to Leeds city centre.
London Airports (Heathrow, Luton, Gatwick, City, and Stansted) are popular options as well. We strongly recommend paying attention to the connections from those airport to Leeds as they may require several changes and may take quite some time.
Trains
National Rail is a simple and easy website to purchase train tickets in the UK. The general advice is to purchase them as far in advance as possible. Remember to leave time for delayed flights and passport queues if necessary.
Trainline is another popular app that allows you to book journeys easily.
Bus
National Express is the major intercity bus company which runs coach lines between many of the aforementioned airports and Leeds. Note that some of these journeys can be very long.
Megabus offers cheap (or at least often cheaper than National Express) bus connections between cities as well.
If traveling by coach, do pay attention to the location of the stations. The station in Leeds is in the city centre, and is close enough that it does not matter, but some of the pickup points may require you to make additional travel within London, for example.
In Leeds
Most of the bus routes in Leeds are operated by FirstBus, you can pay by cash or contactless (including Google Pay and such). These are somewhat reliable, especially around July, but should be taken with a grain of salt. Walking from the city centre to the University will take about the same amount of time, and you may want to do that instead if you are staying in the city centre.
Leeds has several taxi companies as well as Uber.
Hotels
The main hotel for the conference is the Ibis Styles Leeds City Centre Arena. Unfortunately, we cannot offer any discount to the participants, but if you include in the booking remark "120 Years of Choice" they will know that you're visiting for the conference.
There are many other hotels in the same area, as well as elsewhere in the city centre itself. Some options may include the following.
Venue
The conference will take place on the main campus of the University of Leeds. We will have all the talks at the School of Civil Engineering, in Lecture Theatre A. Coffee breaks will take place a the foyer. The reception on Monday will take place at the School of Mathematics.
